Frederick Douglass Narrative of the Life

Of the many captivity stories or 'slave narratives' that emerged in the first half of the nineteenth century, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is widely considered to be the most important. The author, known for his eloquence, brings the same mastery of the English language to his memoir. His book describes the events of his life and is considered to be one of the most influential pieces of literature to fuel the abolitionist movement of the early 19th century in the United States.

Olaudah Equiano The Interesting Narrative of the Life Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, African.

Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African", an autobiography published in 1798. Equiano (c. 1745-1797) was an African writer and abolitionist, who was taken into slavery as a child and transported to the British colony of Virginia. This personal account depicts the narrative of Equiano's life during his years as a slave: from being purchased as a valet to a Royal Navy Lieutenant and his consequent journeys at sea; to being taught to read and write in Britain; and then his placement with Robert King, the wealthy trader who would eventually allow him to buy his freedom. Equiano's memoirs were published 22 years after his release, once he had settled in London and became involved in the abolitionist movement. The work is one of the earliest published by a black African author, and achieved far-reaching popularity and critical acclaim, ultimately contributing to the passing of the British Slave Trade Act of 1807.

Tom Vaughan The Other Side of Loss

When the Revd Robert Melton first arrives at St Mungo's, his initial enthusiasm quickly turns to despondency - until the biggest jackpot in US lottery history triggers a series of uncanny events that throws him, and the seemingly unconnected lives of people on both sides of the Atlantic, into a vortex of questioning, self-doubt and the search for truth. For all of them, try as they might to escape it, the past remains a constant presence. From the run-down despair of Robert's dying inner London parish to the yearnings for love and physical contact of the city's social outcasts - and from the money-driven hubris of Manhattan's financial elite to the home-spun wisdom of rural New England - The Other Side of Loss is a modern-day parable of loss and redemption, of despair and triumph, of human weakness and the life-affirming salvation of human strength in all its meanings.'Any novel that weaves a high-tension narrative out of two priests, prostitution, and a lottery ticket has to keep you turning the pages.'Gyles Brandreth'Zounds! Not since Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein has a more colourful story come from a more surprising source. Tom Vaughan is a very imaginative soul.'George Butler, film producer, The Endurance, Roving Mars, Tiger Tiger

Muuz Haftamu Narrative Time in Yalsekene Zema

Time is one of the fundamental categories of human life experience in real and fictional world. Time can be represented in a narrative texts when it is said that time is one of the basic elements in the human experience of a fictional world. Time is almost the first thing that readers become aware of as he or she reads fiction. Because time in narrative, as Genette (1980) put it, treats the possibilities of temporal arrangements and presentations. In general, time in a narrative text deals with order, duration, and frequency of events in a narrative. For this reason, I choose to work on narrative technique, which is Narrative Time, and on the chosen novel because; firstly, Narrative Time is one big technique that contributes a lot to the development and interpretation of the novel under investigation; secondly, this work will narrow the gap that is found between the modern narrative techniques and current Ethiopian novels that couldn't get the attention of different scholars. Thus the Ethiopian novel entitled "Yalsekene Zema" is analyzed from three facets of Narrative Time; Order, Duration, and Frequency. The main analysis of sample events from the novel carried out in line with t

Ann K. Maloney A Priest Forever. The Life and Times of Father Robert F. McNamara

A Priest Forever: The Life and Times of Father Robert McNamara draws together research, insights from family, parishioners, and colleagues, and original writings to fashion a portrait of Father Robert Francis McNamara, a Roman Catholic priest who served the church's Rochester Diocese. Ann K. Maloney draws together material from a variety of sources to present the life and times of a man whom Rochester's Bishop Matthew H. Clark called "an extraordinary man." In a time in the church's history when deep doubts about the clergy lead many to question the trustworthiness of the church itself, A Priest Forever tells how one man-a faithful servant of God-carried out both his calling to priestly service and his immersion in the life of his wider community.

Paul Nelson Narrative and Morality. A Theological Inquiry

This book analyzes a rich and diverse body of philosophical and theological literature concerning the import of narrative for the understanding of morality. Nelson begins by examining the theses that to understand oneself, a tradition, and history as a whole, they must be understood in the context of a narrative.Recent philosophical writings on the relation of narrative to the moral concepts of social groups and individuals--- including Alasdair MacIntyre's proposal for the rehabilitation of an ethic of virtue shaped by narrative--- are explored. Issues discussed include the freedom of moral agents in relation to their narratives, the relation between narrative and universal moral rules, and the problem of relativism. Next, Nelson classifies theological uses of narrative as belonging to either a liberal-universalistic or postliberal-particularistic tradition and considers the implications of construing scripture as narrative for the problematic relation between scripture and ethics. The work of Stanley Hauerwas, the foremost narrativist in Christian ethics, is analyzed at length. Nelson argues that while narrative is a necessary focus, it does not exhaust the methodological agenda. Narrative is not, as its advocates sometimes suggest, a universal solvent for every theological problem and disagreement. An adequate Christian ethics must not lose sight of the universal, narrative-independent features of morality. Since the realm of the moral is an interweaving of narrative-d...

Many other interesting and curious passages of his life might have been inserted, but on account of the bulk to which they must necessarily have swelled this narrative, they were omitted. If any should suspect the truth of what is here related, they are referred to people now living who are acquainted with most of the facts mentioned in the narrative.

Kibebu Daniel Narrative Time Analysis in Konjowochu

This book explores the narrative time of Konjowochu based on the theoretical approach of narrative time mainly introduced by Gerard Genette in Narrative Discourse and Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan in Narrative Fiction. Thus, the book demonstrates the three aspects of narrative time: order, duration and frequency in Konjowochu. The analysis of the time structure of this novel indicates that the time arrangement in the narrative is crucial for the understanding of the narrative.
